Outrage Unleashed: Protests Ignite Over Mismanagement at Jaruarchar High School During Gunotsav
An unprecedented student protest broke out at Jaruarchar Public High School in Dhubri district on Friday, with over 1,200 students demonstrating against the mismanagement of the Gunotsav examination. The students demanded intervention from Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking action against headmaster Ayub Ali for alleged negligence and irregularities.
The protest was triggered by inadequate seating, forcing six students to share a bench during the examination. Frustrations grew when the headmaster was absent on the crucial day, and the exam, slated for 9:00 AM, was delayed to 10:20 AM. Long-standing allegations of the headmaster’s irregular attendance and poor management were confirmed by an inquiry led by Elementary Education Officer Debasish Singha, involving Block Resource Persons and Cluster Resource Centre Coordinators.
The inquiry revealed severe lapses, including unauthorized demolition of part of the school building for construction work. The demolished area lacked School Management and Development Committee (SMDC) approval, contradicting the headmaster’s claims of having the necessary resolution. The school’s infrastructure is in disrepair, with classrooms lacking electricity and ceiling fans, leaving students to endure harsh heat. Headmaster Ali attributed the lack of electrification to theft and equipment damage, yet no efforts were made to resolve it. Additionally, washrooms are unhygienic, and drinking water facilities are inadequate, posing health risks.
Disciplinary issues also plague the school, with the headmaster’s attendance irregularities noted via the SIKHA SETU app. Morning prayers were discontinued in summer, and allegations emerged about the misuse of digital boards and suspension of Mid-Day Meals on exam days, cutting off essential student nutrition.
Though temporarily pacified by School Management Committee president Maher Ali’s assurance of strict action against the headmaster, the protest has stirred the community. Parents demand immediate government intervention, claiming the headmaster has bypassed the SMDC and neglected regular meetings. The crisis highlights systemic governance and infrastructure failures, urging swift corrective action to restore the school’s integrity and educational standards.
