Unforgettable Unity: Tripura’s Sultan Shah Dargah Fair Draws Diverse Crowds in a Heartwarming Celebration
The Sultan Shah Dargah Unity Fair in Tripura, celebrated annually on the 24th day of the Bengali month of Poush, stands as a testament to harmonious coexistence between different faiths. This vibrant event has, for years, united Hindus and Muslims in a shared celebration of faith, culture, and brotherhood. After the 1947 partition, many Hindu families migrated to Tripura, while Muslims moved to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). In 1950, Shachindramohan Lodh, a migrant from Brahmanbaria, along with Habijuddin from Anandnagar, began celebrating this festival associated with the revered Sultan Shah.
Despite the predominantly Hindu demographics today, the rituals at Sultan Shah Dargah have been maintained for over 75 years by the Hindu community. This enduring tradition underscores a unique example of Hindu-Muslim unity. Each year, a multitude of mystics and spiritual leaders converge at the Dargah, and many believe that Sultan Shah’s blessings protect the area.
Notably, Biplob Lodh, a devout Hindu, worshipped at the Dargah for over five decades. His last wish to be buried in front of the Dargah was honored upon his death in 2022. The fair, initially a small-scale event started in 1990 by local youths like Tapan Lodh and Abu Fakir, gained government recognition in 1994, extending over three days. It now spans five days, supported by local MLA Ram Prasad Pal.
Pritam Lodh, a fair executive, noted that the event commemorates the death anniversary of Fakir Baba, a revered shrine figure. Under his organization, the fair has evolved into a vibrant five-day celebration, featuring cultural performances by local and invited artists. These performances entertain the rural community and offer a platform for cultural exchange and artistic development. As thousands of devotees from the state and beyond gather each year, the fair remains a beacon of unity and spiritual enrichment.
