Shocking Arrest: HPC-D Cadre Captured in Jiribam, Unveiling a New Chapter of Justice
Imphal: Arrest of Suspected HPC-D Cadre in Manipur
In a significant operation, Manipur police along with 38 Assam Rifles apprehended a suspected cadre of the Hmar People’s Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) in Jiribam, Manipur on Friday. The individual, identified as 48-year-old Lalchuoilo Hmar from Lungthuilien village in Pherzawl District, was captured at a hideout by the Barak River near Tuisolen village.
The HPC-D is an underground group that has been advocating for an autonomous district council for the Hmar community residing in the northeastern regions of Manipur. The organization is an offshoot of the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC), which signed a peace agreement with the Mizoram government in 1994. Despite this accord leading to the creation of a development council, the insurgent activities persisted through HPC-D until it reached a settlement with the state government in 2018.
During the operation, law enforcement officials seized substantial materials from the hideout, including 20 explosive sticks, 11 detonators, one meter of safety fuse, and 44 soap caps filled with a brown powder believed to be Brown Sugar. This substance, weighing approximately 457 grams, has an estimated local market value of Rs 20 lakhs.
Following his arrest, a legal case has been registered against Lalchuoilo Hmar, and he has been transferred to Jiribam Police Station for further investigation and legal actions. Such operations highlight the ongoing efforts to curb insurgency and illegal activities in the region.
This development forms part of the broader security measures in Northeast India aimed at dismantling separatist elements and ensuring the safety and peace of the residents in border areas.
