Tragic Discovery: Beloved Dima Hasao Resident Identified as Second Victim in Umrangso Coal Mine
The recovery of a second body from Assam’s Umrangso coal mine has been confirmed as Ligen Magar, a resident of Umrangshu in Dima Hasao, Assam, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The confirmation came via the Chief Minister’s official social media account on January 11. “The identity of the recovered body has been confirmed as Ligen Magar, aged approximately 27 years,” Sarma posted on X.
Ongoing rescue efforts continue at the mine, with teams urgently searching for seven miners still missing. Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh, Team Commander of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), explained to ANI that significant efforts are underway, including monitoring and reducing the water levels each morning. “We check the water level every morning. And when we were doing that, we saw a body floating. So we took it out at around 7:30 am. The water level has been reduced by 6 metres. 5 pumps were working overnight… The operation is going on 24 hours,” Singh said.
The discovery of Ligen Magar’s body marks the second fatality in the ongoing crisis, elevating the urgency for rescuers to intensify their operations to retrieve the remaining trapped miners. The Assam Chief Minister expressed condolences on X, emphasizing the continued efforts and expressing sorrow over the situation. “Rescue efforts in Umrangsu continue with unwavering resolve. Tragically, another body was recovered this morning, with the identity yet to be confirmed. Our hearts go out to the grieving, as we hold onto hope and strength in this difficult time,” he stated.
Previously, on January 8, Army divers from the 21 Para Special Forces recovered the first body, identified as Ganga Bahadur Srestho of Udayapur district, Nepal. The ongoing search and rescue mission remains active despite challenges as authorities work to bring closure to grieving families.
