Urgent Action: High Court Demands Removal of Disturbing Deepfake Videos of Dr. Naresh Trehan Offering Urology Advice – A Critical Delhi News Update
The Delhi High Court has ordered the removal of deepfake videos featuring renowned cardiothoracic vascular surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan, in which he appears to provide medical advice on urology-related issues and promote natural remedies. The directive came on Wednesday from Justice Mini Pushkarna, who issued a John Doe order due to the anonymity of the culprits. The court mandated these misleading videos, propagated through social media, to be taken down within 24 hours. Should this deadline not be met, Meta, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) are tasked with their removal.
Furthermore, the court instructed DoT, MEITY, and Meta to submit affidavits revealing all pertinent information associated with the videos. Despite the order, at least one of the flagged links remains active as of Thursday.
The legal case was initiated by Global Health Limited and Dr. Trehan, highlighting the infringement on personality and publicity rights, as well as trademark violations. The petitioners discovered on December 23, 2024, that the video had been circulated since December 16, 2024. The deepfake, allegedly created using AI and other digital manipulation techniques, misleadingly targets urology issues like prostatitis and erectile dysfunction—areas outside Dr. Trehan’s specialization. Dr. Trehan, the Heart Institute’s chairman at Medanta, The Medicity Hospital in Gurugram, is actually a specialist in cardiothoracic surgery.
The contentious video surfaced on an anonymous Facebook page, “Maria Ideas,” supposedly based in Kyiv, garnering significant views and engagements, with over 1.1 million views and 6,400 likes. The legal action underscores the growing concern over deepfake technology’s misuse, emphasizing the need for tight regulation and quick action to protect individuals’ rights and reputations in an era where digital misinformation is rampant.
