Surprising Surge: Rural Nagaland’s Household Spending Soars by 17% – Govt Survey Reveals
The latest Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) reveals that household spending in Nagaland has risen significantly between the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 periods. According to data from the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the average monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) in rural areas surged by 17.35%, reaching Rs 5,155. Urban areas saw a 12.06% rise, climbing to Rs 8,022. This indicates that while both rural and urban consumption have increased, urban standards remain notably higher, partly due to better availability of goods and services.
The survey also highlights that “Egg, Fish, & Meat” remains the top expenditure category in both food and non-food items, reaffirming long-standing consumption preferences in the state. In 2022-23, these items accounted for approximately 28% of the total food expenditure in both rural and urban sectors. The report suggests a shift in expenditure patterns over the decade, with an increase in spending on “Beverages, Processed Food, Etc.” surpassing that on “Clothing & Bedding.”
Nationwide, Nagaland’s MPCE figures exceed the national average, with Sikkim topping the charts in the North-East. The rising MPCE in Nagaland is partially attributed to higher prices, reflecting increased household expenses. The survey’s findings indicate a narrowing urban-rural consumption gap, contributing to enhanced overall living standards across the state. The Gini coefficient, measuring consumption inequality, shows a decline, indicating improved economic equality in both rural and urban areas.
Overall, the HCES provides crucial insights into the evolving consumption patterns and economic well-being in Nagaland, with non-food items continuing to dominate household expenditure, accounting for a substantial portion of spending.
