The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has enlisted former Pakistan captain Younis Khan as the mentor for their men’s cricket team in preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will take place in Pakistan. The 47-year-old cricket veteran, celebrated for his illustrious international career, will join the team in Pakistan ahead of the tournament starting on February 19.
Younis Khan’s rich history in cricket, including 118 Test matches, 265 One-Day Internationals, and 25 T20 appearances for Pakistan, positions him as a strong asset for the Afghan squad. Notably, this appointment marks his second association with Afghanistan, following his involvement in a training camp in Abu Dhabi in 2022. His previous role as the national team’s batting coach for Pakistan in 2021 was cut short due to disagreements with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Afghanistan, grouped with England, Australia, and South Africa, will commence their campaign against South Africa in Karachi on February 21. Meanwhile, India shares Group A with Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, with all their matches scheduled in Dubai. Afghanistan’s strong performance at the World Cup in India, finishing sixth after notable victories over England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, secured their place in this prestigious event. Their charge to the semifinals in the T20 World Cup further exemplifies their growing prowess in international cricket.
Younis Khan’s appointment follows Afghanistan’s recent trend of leveraging local expertise for major ICC events, previously engaging former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja and West Indian Dwayne Bravo for mentorship roles. The selection of Younis underscores Afghanistan’s understanding of the strategic advantage of a mentor familiar with the local conditions, as noted by ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan. This reflects Afghanistan’s commitment to strengthening their competitive edge on the international stage.
