Indian Badminton Surge: Excitement Soars as Record Players Challenge Olympic Titans Viktor Axelsen & An Se Young
The Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2025 is poised to be a landmark event, showcasing a record number of Indian participants in its third edition. Scheduled from January 14-19 at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, this BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament will feature top-tier talent, including Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen, An Se Young, and world No. 1 Shi Yuqi. Elevated to Super 750 status in 2023, the event offers a substantial prize pool of USD 950,000 and 11,000 ranking points for the champions, solidifying its place as a premier stop on the global badminton calendar.
India, increasing its presence with 21 entries, will compete across all categories. Featured are notable players such as former men’s singles champion Lakshya Sen, dual Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, and renowned men’s doubles team, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. These athletes are expected to spearhead India’s challenge and underscore the country’s rising prominence in international badminton.
Previous editions saw 14 Indian entries with shining performances. Notably, Chirag and Satwik reached the men’s doubles final, and HS Prannoy advanced to the men’s singles semi-finals in 2024. This year’s event promises intense competition, with only two top-20 men’s singles players absent and a lineup of 14 out of the top 20 women’s singles players participating.
The doubles categories anticipate potential surprises due to post-Olympic changes in partnerships, adding to the competitive thrill. Key international contenders include Liang Weikeng/Wang Chang from China, Malaysia’s Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, Denmark’s Kim Astrup/Anders Rasmussen, and Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
The stage is set for an exhilarating showcase of badminton excellence, where emerging Indian talents will vie for glory alongside seasoned global stars, bringing pride to the nation and captivating audiences with their exceptional skills.
