On Sunday, January 5, U.S. President Joe Biden honored 19 individuals from various fields such as politics, entertainment, and sports with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony. The recipients, highlighted by The New York Times, included prominent figures associated with the Democratic Party, such as Hillary Clinton, philanthropist George Soros, and the late Robert F. Kennedy. The recognition also extended to global icons like Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi, who could not attend due to scheduling conflicts, anthropologist Jane Goodall, and actor Denzel Washington.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor. Initially established by President Harry S. Truman in 1945 and later redefined by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, the medal acknowledges outstanding contributions to national security, world peace, or cultural and public endeavors. The design features a white star, a red pentagon, five gold eagles, and a central blue circle with 13 gold stars.
The President personally selects each recipient. Executive Order 11515, issued in 1970, grants the President the discretion to award any individual recommended to them or chosen on their initiative. At times, U.S. Congress members may submit recommendations. The selections often reflect the President’s political and personal interests.

This contrasts with selections made during Donald Trump’s presidency, which included conservative figures like the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
