Chaos Unfolds in Delhi: Intense Fog Causes Frustration with 15 Flights Canceled and Over 180 Delayed
On January 5, Delhi’s dense fog caused at least 15 flight cancellations and over 180 delays, significantly affecting transport in the region. Train services were similarly disrupted, with more than 60 trains arriving late or departing late from the capital. The fog had already caused travel chaos the previous day, January 4, with the city experiencing an unprecedented nine-hour period of zero visibility—the longest seen this winter season.
At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, zero visibility was reported from 4 am to 8 am on January 5, reducing slightly compared to the previous day’s nine-hour spell. As a result, visibility improved to 50 meters at 8 am. By 11:30 am, flight tracking sources like Flightradar confirmed 15 flight cancellations and more than 180 delays, with an average delay of 25 minutes.
The India Meteorological Department recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4°C on January 5 at Safdarjung station. A day prior, the dense fog resulted in 48 flight cancellations and delayed 564 flights at IGI Airport. Safdarjung’s minimum temperature was 7.8°C, slightly above normal. The maximum temperature reached 20°C.
Humidity levels were extremely high, between 96% and 100%. The weather department forecast a partly cloudy sky on January 5, with gentle southeast winds at less than 4 kmph. Temperature expectations were 18°C maximum and 10°C minimum.
Air quality remained concerning, with Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 378, categorizing it as ‘very poor.’ The Central Pollution Control Board classifies AQI from 301 to 400 as ‘very poor’, posing health risks to vulnerable groups.
Transport officials and agencies continue working to mitigate the fog’s impact and ensure smoother travel as weather conditions stabilize.
