Heart-Wrenching Tragedy: Over 184 Lives Lost in Devastating Israeli Airstrikes on Gaza
Gaza, January 5 (IANS) – The Gaza media office, under Hamas administration, reported that the Israeli military launched 94 airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in the last 72 hours, resulting in 184 casualties. The office condemned the operation as a “dangerous and brutal escalation” directed at civilians and residential zones, primarily in Gaza City. Many victims remain trapped under debris due to extensive infrastructure damage, impairing rescue efforts and hospital access, according to Xinhua news agency.
Local Civil Defence officials confirmed an increase in the intensity of Israeli airstrikes over three days, with residents describing the situation as profoundly difficult. The Gaza media statement accused the Israeli army of “horrific crimes” and criticized the US for its support of Israel, urging the international community and the UN Security Council to send independent investigators to document these incidents and hold perpetrators accountable.
The recent escalation began Thursday after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened unprecedented military response unless Hamas released hostages and halted rocket attacks. Negotiations, led by mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and the US, have stalled on critical issues like prolonging the ceasefire. Hamas advocates for continuing the truce, while Israel reserves the right to resume attacks if it feels threatened. Furthermore, Hamas’s demand for Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza remains contentious, with Israel insisting on maintaining its military presence for security reasons.
Since hostilities erupted on October 7, 2023, Israel’s large-scale military campaign against Hamas in Gaza has led to over 45,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health authorities. This conflict was sparked by a Hamas assault on southern Israel, which killed more than 1,200 Israelis and involved the capture of approximately 250 hostages.
