Fire Ravages Lhomithi Colony, Leaves Five Families Homeless in Dimapur

For the third consecutive day, the Fire and Emergency Services personnel in Dimapur were actively engaged as yet another fire broke out on January 3, this time in Lhomithi colony. Following recent fires in K Kire colony, Kuda village, and Naharbari on January 1 and 2, the latest blaze in Lhomithi engulfed a residential compound near Pranabanda Women’s College, displacing five families out of the 12 housed there.
The inferno resulted in the explosion of at least three LPG cylinders, leading firefighters to battle flames for over an hour. Despite the severity, no human casualties were reported. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The Fire Station (West) dispatched two fire trucks immediately upon receiving the alert at 12:48 pm, while two additional trucks were requisitioned from the Central Station. The affected structures were a mix of Assam-type houses and others built from brick and bamboo.
Despite frequent criticisms of delayed response times, firefighters dispute these claims, attributing challenges to Dimapur’s notorious traffic congestion and obstructions caused by onlookers. A firefighter highlighted that narrow roads often trap fire trucks, and ill-parked vehicles further hinder access to fire sites.
Firefighters assert continuous vigilance, ready to respond to any distress call without delay. "We are on alert round the clock," a firefighter shared, emphasizing their commitment amidst challenging conditions. This string of incidents underscores the pressing need for community cooperation and strategic improvements in emergency accessibility to ensure resident safety.
The recent fires call for heightened awareness and preparedness among residents and authorities alike, as solutions are sought to mitigate future risks and improve response efficiency.
