Loyal, a biotech start-up in San Francisco, plans to introduce a beef-flavored pill, LOY-002, early next year, aimed at adding at least one year of healthy life to dogs. The company, backed by $125 million in funding, believes that studying aging in dogs will provide insights applicable to human health, as they face similar environmental and health challenges.
The Dog Aging Project, another initiative, is exploring rapamycin, a cost-effective drug known for extending mice’s lifespans. Preliminary research indicates it might enhance dogs’ heart and cognitive health, potentially adding three healthy years to their lives. If successful, this approach could revolutionize human longevity research.
Celine Halioua, CEO of Loyal, emphasizes the potential benefits for human aging, as these studies offer a natural environment perspective, unlike traditional lab research on mice. Daniel Promislow, a biogerontologist at the University of Washington and co-director of the Dog Aging Project, notes the significance of this large-scale study of animals in their natural habitats.
