Controversial Clash: Gujarat’s Heated Debate Over Ayurveda Practitioners Delving into Allopathy Ignites Passionate Reactions | Ahmedabad News

A controversial move by the Gujarat Health Department has sparked a strong reaction from the Gujarat State Branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA-GSB). The department has called a meeting on January 3 in Gandhinagar to address the practice of allopathy by individuals trained in Ayurveda, excluding IMA-GSB from the discussions. This meeting follows a recent decision by Maharashtra’s FDA permitting homeopaths with modern pharmacology training to prescribe allopathic medicines.

In a letter to Gujarat Health Commissioner Harshad Kumar R Patel, IMA-GSB expressed concerns about the unauthorized practice of modern medicine, labeling it a threat to public health and urging the government to formulate an action plan. They argue that allowing Ayurvedic practitioners to prescribe allopathic treatments without adequate training poses severe risks, including patient complications and erosion of trust in the medical system.

Dr. Mehul Shah, President of IMA-GSB, emphasized the need for practitioners to remain within their trained fields, warning against shortcuts in professional practices. Conversely, Dr. Sanjay Prabhudas Jivrajani, President of the Gujarat Board of Ayurvedic and Unani System of Medicine (GBAU), defended the qualifications of Ayurvedic practitioners, highlighting their pharmacology education and posting in rural healthcare settings. He urged for a collaborative approach among different medical systems and aimed to correct misconceptions around alternative practices.

The meeting, led by Dhananjay Dwivedi, Principal Secretary of Health, is prompted by a representation from Dr. Kamlesh C Rajgor of Yogeshwar Multispeciality Hospital. It seeks input from various health department officials and boards to discuss cross-system practices.

The issue underscores a broader debate on the integration and delineation of medical practices in India, amid growing pressure to address healthcare accessibility and quality. Efforts to reach Health Commissioner Harshadkumar Patel for comment were unsuccessful.
