AIZAWL: The former Army Chief, General Vijay Kumar Singh, is set to officially become the governor of Mizoram on January 9, following an announcement made on Monday. This significant event will feature the presence of Chief Minister Lalduhoma, members of his cabinet, and other esteemed guests, including Speaker Lalbiakzama, Deputy Speaker Lalfamkima, and Members of Parliament. The oath-taking ceremony, a pivotal part of this transition, will see General Singh taking the oath of office and secrecy under the guidance of the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
General Singh’s appointment, announced by President Droupadi Murmu on a previous Tuesday, marks a new chapter in Mizoram’s governance. He succeeds Hari Babu Kambhampati, who has recently been assigned the role of Governor of Odisha following Raghubar Das’s resignation.
General Singh, born in 1951, has had a storied career, serving as the 24th Chief of Army Staff from 2010 to 2012. After retiring from the army, he transitioned into politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014. His political journey saw him elected to the Lok Sabha from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, and re-elected in 2019. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, General Singh played an influential role by holding several ministerial positions, including Minister of State for External Affairs, and Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways.
This appointment comes amidst reports of Mizoram experiencing peaceful Christmas festivities with minimal incidents as noted by the police. Simultaneously, the state’s ZPM government is addressing administrative reforms, along with challenges relating to refugee influx and border disputes.
As General Singh takes on his new responsibilities, all eyes will be on Mizoram, anticipating the impacts of his leadership on the region.
