Historic Milestone: Israel Triumphantly Deploys US THAAD System to Thwart Houthi Missile Threat
Israel has successfully utilized the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system to intercept a ballistic missile launched by Houthi rebels from Yemen. This is the first known use of the THAAD system by Israel, which was deployed by the United States in the country in October, according to the Times of Israel. The interception was highlighted in widely shared social media videos, capturing the moment of interception accompanied by the voice of an excited American soldier exclaiming, “Eighteen years I’ve been waiting for this.”
While the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the interception, they have not publicly acknowledged the specific use of the THAAD system. However, Walla news site reported the successful engagement of the missile using the THAAD system. This advanced missile defense technology, developed by the United States, is designed to intercept short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal phase using kinetic energy, which destroys missiles through impact rather than explosives.
THAAD’s capability to intercept missiles both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere makes it a significant defensive asset. Each THAAD battery consists of six truck-mounted launchers, up to eight interceptors per launcher, a radar, and a fire control system, with detection ranges from 870 to 3,000 kilometers.
This interception occurred amidst heightened tensions, as the Houthis have launched their fifth attack on Israel in eight days. The recent assault reportedly targeted Ben Gurion Airport, prompting Israeli airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, including the Hezyaz power plant and Sanaa International Airport. This development underscores the escalating conflict in the region and the strategic alliances shaping its defense dynamics.
