New Delhi: December 27, 2024 (IANS) – Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, whom she regarded as a ‘friend, philosopher, and guide.’ Singh, aged 92, died from age-related illnesses at AIIMS in Delhi. In a heartfelt tribute at the Congress Working Committee meeting, Gandhi highlighted Singh’s unwavering commitment to social justice, secularism, and democratic values, describing him as an embodiment of wisdom and humility.
Praising Singh’s contributions to India’s progress, Gandhi affirmed that the Congress party and the nation are proud to have had a leader of such stature. Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to conduct Singh’s last rites at a location suitable for establishing a memorial, honoring the late leader’s legacy. Kharge noted Singh’s esteemed place in the country’s collective memory, emphasizing his economic expertise, particularly during financial crises. The late leader’s experience as the Reserve Bank of India governor and chief economic advisor were pivotal in his commendable tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014.
Kharge stressed that Singh’s wisdom was globally acknowledged, referencing former US President Obama’s remarks on Singh’s influential voice in international affairs. In his plea to PM Modi, Kharge highlighted Singh’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings, underscoring his significant impact on India’s economic stability and growth. He urged that Singh’s final resting place be designated for a memorial, reinforcing the tradition of honoring prominent statesmen at their funeral sites.
