New Delhi, Dec 26: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the eminent economist who played a pivotal role in transforming India’s economy, has passed away at the age of 92. Admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, due to declining health, Dr. Singh succumbed after a sudden loss of consciousness at his home. Despite immediate medical intervention, he was declared dead at 9.51 p.m.
Dr. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was instrumental in ushering significant economic liberalisation as Finance Minister in 1991. His tenure is remembered for integrating India into the global market, driving economic growth, reducing poverty, and strengthening the nation’s global standing. Known for his humility and intellect, Dr. Singh was a revered figure in Indian and international spheres.
During his leadership, he championed substantial reforms in education, food security, and information. His passing has left India in mourning, with tributes pouring in from leaders worldwide, recognizing his contributions to economics and public service. Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters.

His last significant parliamentary commentary criticized the demonetisation policy as “organized loot and legalized plunder.”
Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, Dr. Singh’s academic credentials include a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Economics from Panjab University, an Economic Tripos from Cambridge University in 1957, and a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1962. His death signifies the end of an era, leaving a legacy of leadership and reform that will continue to inspire future generations.
