Exciting Milestone: NHPC’s Lower Subansiri Project Set to Energize the Future with 3×250 MW Units by May 2025!
Guwahati: NHPC, the state-owned hydro power corporation, announced the anticipated completion dates for its Subansiri Lower hydroelectric project at Gerukamukh, Arunachal Pradesh. Three units, each with a capacity of 250 MW, are scheduled to be operational by May 2025, while the remaining five units, also 250 MW each, are expected to be completed by May 2026.
The company also reported significant financial setbacks due to natural disasters affecting its operations. The Teesta-V power station in Sikkim was severely impacted by an October 2023 flash flood, resulting in damages estimated at Rs 1,075.97 crore. This financial hit has been reported to the insurer, and restoration projects for civil and hydro-mechanical works are underway, with contracts for packages 1 through 5 already awarded.
Additionally, a landslide on August 20, 2024, caused material damage amounting to Rs 327.67 crore. The full extent of this damage is still being assessed as debris clearance progresses in the transformer radiator tank (TRT) and gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) areas. The company stated that tendering for restoration contracts focusing on electrical and hydro-mechanical components is in its advanced stages.
These setbacks underscore the challenges faced by NHPC in maintaining and advancing its hydroelectric ventures in the Northeast and Sikkim, highlighting the pressing need for resilience in infrastructure against natural calamities.
