Crucial Joint Parliamentary Panel Inspires Change: Reviewing Waqf Properties with State Leaders from Karnataka, Rajasthan, and MP

The Joint Committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is actively engaging with state officials to address the management and regulation of Waqf properties across India. Recently, the committee met with principal and revenue secretaries from the Department of Minority Affairs in Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. These discussions, held on Thursday, focused on understanding the status of both registered and unregistered Waqf properties within these states.

Jagadambika Pal, the committee’s chairperson, emphasized the panel’s commitment to broadening its consultative process. Speaking to the media, Pal revealed plans to involve additional organizations and state government officials. The committee also intends to tour several key states, including West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, to further its inquiry. Notably, the committee has already conducted around 20 visits to cities such as Kolkata, Patna, and Lucknow and plans future engagements in Jammu and Kashmir to gather insights from relevant stakeholders.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, proposes pivotal reforms aimed at improving the management of Waqf properties throughout the nation. Central to the bill’s agenda are initiatives like the digitization of records, enhancing audit processes, and introducing legal mechanisms to reclaim properties illegally occupied.
