Celebrating Triumph: Easterine Kire’s ‘Spirit Nights’ Wins Prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award 2024
Nagaland author Easterine Kire has clinched the Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 for her novel “Spirit Nights” in the English language category. The prestigious awards, unveiled by the Sahitya Akademi on Wednesday, honored literary excellence across 21 languages.
Kire’s acclaimed novel, published by Simon and Schuster India, draws inspiration from a tale of darkness shared by the Chang Naga tribe of Nagaland. Her achievement highlights the rich cultural tapestry and storytelling heritage of the North East region.
Other notable honorees from the North East include Assamese author Sameer Tanti for “Pharingbore Bator Katha Jane” and Manipuri poet Haobam Satyabati Devi for “Mainu Bora Nungshi Sheirol,” each celebrated in the Poetry category. Additionally, Aron Raja’s “Swrni Thakhai” received the award for the Bodo language in the Novel category.
Each awardee is set to receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a traditional shawl, and a cash prize of one lakh rupees. The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 8, 2025, in Delhi.
This recognition by the Sahitya Akademi underscores the diverse literary landscape of India, celebrating authors who bring regional narratives to the forefront of national consciousness. With its focus on themes rooted in cultural narratives, this year’s selection showcases the power of literature to bridge communities and shed light on lesser-known histories and traditions.
