Revitalizing Sikkim’s Large Cardamom Industry: A High-Profile Brainstorming Session in New Delhi
Sikkim, renowned for its large cardamom production, took a significant step toward combating challenges faced by this crucial crop as experts gathered in New Delhi for a strategic brainstorming session. This crop is vital for over 16,000 farming families in Sikkim, serving not only as an economic backbone but also as a cultural symbol.
The meeting was spearheaded by Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under the Government of India. It was organized at the behest of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim. The session attracted distinguished experts from leading institutions such as NABI (Mohali), IBSD (Manipur), NIPGR (New Delhi), ICGEB (New Delhi), BHU (Varanasi), and NCBS (Bangalore), along with key industry players like ATGC Biotech and T. Stanes and Company.
Sikkim’s representation included Science and Technology Secretary Dr. Sandeep Tambe, Horticulture Secretary Tilak Gajmer, and DST Principal Director Dhirendra Shrestha. The collaborative discussions tackled critical issues including the accessibility of disease-free planting materials, innovative methods to disrupt disease cycles, and the launch of research trials to explore advanced biotechnological solutions. Strategies to extend crop productivity using bio-control agents and genetic improvements for sustainable farming were also discussed.
A significant outcome was the decision to create a high-level working group. This group will be responsible for crafting a comprehensive strategy and action plan encompassing short-, medium-, and long-term measures aimed at sustainably revitalizing Sikkim’s large cardamom industry. The framework for this initiative is expected to be finalized within a month.
This meeting marks the start of a transformative journey, highlighting Sikkim’s commitment to scientific and technological advancements. It aims to restore Sikkim as a global leader in large cardamom production, showcasing a blend of innovation and collaborative effort to benefit the region’s agricultural economy.
