Unleashing Thrill and Sustainability: MLA Oken Tayeng Champions Arunachal’s Adventure Tourism Boom
The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) spotlighted Arunachal Pradesh as a burgeoning destination for adventure tourism during its 16th Annual Adventure Convention. Held over six days from December 3 to 8 in Tawang, the convention gathered national industry experts to unpack the northeastern state’s untapped tourism potential.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu emphasized the promise of Arunachal Pradesh in becoming a key hub for adventure tourism, noting that the event marked a significant step toward driving economic growth and gaining global tourism recognition. He stated, “Arunachal Pradesh offers unparalleled natural beauty and opportunities for adventure tourism. With the right planning and sustainable measures, we can emerge as a premier destination.”
Oken Tayeng, Member of Legislative Assembly and national tourism advisor, highlighted the significance of sustainable tourism practices. He cautioned against the perils of over-tourism seen in other Himalayan regions and advocated for tourism efforts that support local communities while preserving the region’s pristine environment. “The local inhabitants, as guardians of these landscapes, should have the opportunity to earn livelihoods through sustainable tourism at their doorsteps,” Tayeng remarked, stressing the need for carefully managed growth.
The convention featured a showcase of Arunachal Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage and adventurous landscape, positioning the state as a potential global hotspot for adventure-focused activities. Tayeng’s contributions to local tourism were acknowledged, including his establishment of ‘The Hump WW-II Museum’ in Pasighat, commemorating the daring American pilots of World War II and linking Arunachal’s historical significance with its tourism goals.
As the convention drew to a close, discussions pivoted to long-term strategies for cultivating Arunachal Pradesh as a sustainable, adventure-centric tourism hub, focusing on preserving its natural beauty while harnessing its economic potential for future generations.
