Discover Hope: Manipur and Tripura Shine Bright Among Top 5 States & UTs with Low TB Prevalence
Guwahati: Manipur and Tripura have been recognized as being among the safest states in India concerning tuberculosis (TB) infections, with fewer than 100 cases per lakh of the population reported this year, according to government data. The World Health Organization defines ‘TB case notifications’ as the count of individuals diagnosed and officially reported with TB. A recent statement by Anupriya Patel, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, highlights that the TB notification rate in Manipur as of December 8 is 64 cases per lakh, surpassing only Kerala (59) and Lakshadweep (11). In the northeastern region, Nagaland reported the highest notification rates, followed by Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura.
The government has implemented multiple measures to address TB more effectively. These include early diagnosis, timely treatment, and preventive strategies focusing on high TB burden areas through state-specific plans. Patients receive free medication and diagnostics, while those in remote or challenging regions are incentivized with a one-time payment of Rs 750. Decentralized TB screening and treatment are extended to Ayushman Arogya Mandir, and private sector engagement is encouraged with incentives for case management.
The government has also invested in TB research areas such as drug development, diagnostics, and vaccines through the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). These efforts have led to significant achievements, including establishing a network of reference labs, developing new diagnostic tools, utilizing AI for X-ray reading, and conducting community screenings via portable X-rays. Other highlights include successful clinical trials testing drug regimens for drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB and explorations of potential TB vaccines, including studies on adult BCG vaccinations. These initiatives emphasize the government’s commitment to reducing TB prevalence and improving public health.
