Experience the Enchantment: Nagaland’s First Indigenous Christmas Concert Revives Roots and Celebrates Culture
On December 12, Nagaland hosted the inaugural “Joy to the World—An Indigenous Christmas Concert,” a symbolic cultural celebration blending Christmas traditions with Indigenous music. The event took place at the Afuko College of Music & Indigenous Arts (ACMIA), an institution dedicated to reviving Naga cultural heritage through music, located at Platinum College, Aküvüto, Thahekhu. The concert featured an impressive array of performers from Nagaland and beyond, with the international highlight being Edgar Macapili, a renowned folk and sacred music artist from Taiwan, who attended with his wife, Shu Chuan Wang.
Organized under the leadership of Rev Hojevi Kappo, founder and director of Nagagenous and ACMIA, the concert marked a historic milestone for Nagaland by fostering cultural and musical unity. Special guests included G Kaito Aye, Minister for PWD Roads & Bridges, and KT Sukhalu, Advisor for Food & Civil Supplies. Performances by groups and individuals like Nagagenous, Supu Lejo, and the Cantamus Choir, among others, captivated the audience. The evening culminated in a powerful collective rendition of “Joy to the World.”
ACMIA aims to revive Naga music and culture, incorporating both Indigenous and Western musical training in its curriculum. Rev Kappo expressed optimism about the success of the event and the college’s role in renewing and promoting traditional Naga arts. He emphasized the importance of rediscovering cultural roots amidst modern influences.
Edgar Macapili, representing both the Philippines and Taiwan, underscored the event’s significance in preserving cultural identities and fostering global cultural exchange. Rev Kappo highlighted the deeper meaning of Christmas, focusing on peace and reconciliation. He expressed hopes for the concert to become an annual event, inspiring future generations to appreciate their cultural roots while engaging with the global community. The event commenced with a prayer by Rev Dr Phughoto Sema, Executive Secretary of WSBAK, and concluded with a benediction by Rev Phushito Chishi.
