Urgent Action in Meghalaya: PHE Minister Vows to Safeguard Over 749 Critical Water Sources
Meghalaya Public Health Engineering Minister, Marcuise N. Marak, has announced that over 749 water sources in the state have been classified as ‘critical,’ signaling a potential water crisis. During a press briefing, Marak disclosed the state government’s commitment to reviving these vital resources through robust measures and expert-led interventions.
To spearhead this initiative, the Meghalaya government plans to involve experts in drafting, preparing, and executing a project aimed at the preservation of these water sources. A noteworthy aspect of the strategy is the incorporation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which will enable continuous monitoring of water quality across rivers and water bodies in the region. This tech-driven approach is expected to enhance the management and sustainability of water resources effectively.
Moreover, the state is pursuing the ambitious goal of fully implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) by March 2025. To date, 81.39 percent of the work under the JJM has been completed, with ongoing efforts to finish the remaining tasks. This initiative encompasses over 6,000 projects, all of which are geo-tagged to facilitate timely funding releases from the central government.
Marak emphasized the importance of these projects not only in safeguarding water resources but also in ensuring sustainable and reliable water supply systems for the people of Meghalaya. As the state progresses toward its goals, these efforts reflect a commitment to addressing critical water issues and improving the quality of life for its residents.
This comprehensive approach by the Meghalaya government underscores a proactive response to water source degradation, aligning technological innovations with sustainable resource management to secure the state’s water future.
