Transformative Breakthrough: Meghalaya Government Unveils Ambitious Multi-Crore Road Project to Revolutionize Transportation Woes
Meghalaya has taken a major step towards resolving long-standing infrastructure challenges with the inauguration of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur (NUS) road construction. This significant project was launched by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in a ceremony at Umden, Ri Bhoi district, marking a new chapter in improving transportation connectivity for the region.
The long-awaited NUS road project aims to enhance the lives of residents in Umden and its surrounding areas by improving accessibility, which has been severely hindered by the road’s poor condition, particularly during the monsoon season. The project is strategically planned in two phases: Phase one will cover a 20-kilometer stretch from Nongpoh to Umden, with a financial outlay of Rs. 49.53 crore from the state’s road development budget. The second phase will expand the road by 38.6 kilometers from Umden to Sonapur, with funding of Rs. 47.20 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) III Batch I. The completed road will feature a 5.5-meter-wide intermediate lane to ensure commuter safety and efficiency.
During the foundation stone ceremony, Tynsong reiterated the state government’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure enhancement across Meghalaya. “Our government is dedicated to upgrading the state’s infrastructure, having allocated thousands of crores towards road development, with many projects completed or underway,” he stated. Tynsong outlined substantial funding allocations, including Rs. 1,100 crore from the state plan, Rs. 1,100 crore from PMGSY, Rs. 400 crore from the Central Infrastructure Fund (CIRF), Rs. 140 crore from the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), and Rs. 2,000 crore from the World Bank.
Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem expressed heartfelt gratitude to the chief minister, deputy chief minister, and other stakeholders for their role in realizing this project. Syiem emphasized that the initiative goes beyond road construction to transform lives and boost the region’s socio-economic prospects. The event saw attendance from notable figures, including Umsning MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, Nongpoh MDC Balajied Rani, and senior Public Works Department (PWD) officials, highlighting the project’s importance. The NUS road project is poised to deliver significant benefits, including improved connectivity, economic growth, and enhanced quality of life for local residents, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing regional infrastructure needs.
