IAS Officer K. Gopalakrishnan Suspended Over Alleged Communal WhatsApp Group

K. Gopalakrishnan, a distinguished IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, known for his impressive academic achievements such as a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and a postgraduate degree in Financial Management, has recently faced suspension. As a 2013 batch officer and previously serving as the Director of Industries and Commerce in Kerala, Gopalakrishnan has been accused of creating a WhatsApp group titled ‘Mallu Hindu Officers’ that allegedly promoted communal divisions among the Indian Administrative Service community.

Originating from a farming family in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, Gopalakrishnan is supported by his wife, Deepa, a housewife, and their two children, Athira and Visakhan. Despite the apparent respectability of his background, this incident has cast a shadow over his career.

The controversy unfolded on October 31, when several Kerala IAS officers were reportedly added to this contentious WhatsApp group. Media sources indicated forensic investigations suggesting routine activity on apps like WhatsApp and Google up until that date. However, further scrutiny exposed frequent factory resets of Gopalakrishnan’s phone, pointing to possible data deletions.

In his defense, Gopalakrishnan contended that his phone was hacked and misused for cybercriminal activities. Nonetheless, preliminary investigations by Thiruvananthapuram City police found no conclusive evidence of such hacking, especially after Gopalakrishnan admitted to formatting his phone, erasing potential forensic traces.

Consequently, on November 11, 2024, the Kerala government suspended Gopalakrishnan, pending a detailed inquiry into the matter, marking a significant turn in his career. This case underscores the critical expectations placed on civil servants to maintain integrity and unity within their ranks while navigating the complexities of digital communication responsibly.
