Seventeen-year-old Anmol Kharb showcased her composure and resilience at the Guwahati Masters Super 100 badminton tournament, outplaying defending champion Lalinrat Chaiwan from Thailand in the quarterfinals. Kharb, a rising star in India’s women’s singles badminton, made a remarkable comeback from deficits of 11-16 and 16-20 in the second game. Despite missing two match points, she secured a hard-fought victory in the decider, winning 21-13, 22-24, 22-20. This victory, which lasted an hour and 14 minutes, propelled her into the semifinals, where she will face fellow Indian Mansi Singh, who defeated Thailand’s Yataweemin Kateklieng 22-20, 21-18.
Kharb’s current form follows her impressive performances as part of the Indian women’s team that clinched gold at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championships and her recent titles in Belgium and Poland.
In the men’s singles, third seed Sathish Kumar Karunakaran advanced to the semifinals after beating Thailand’s Saran Jamsri 21-19, 21-13. He will next face Chinese sixth seed Wang Zheng Xing.
In the women’s doubles category, India’s top seeds and defending champions Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto remain the country’s only hope. They secured their semifinal spot by overcoming Chinese opponents Huang Ke Xin and Tang Rui Zhi with a scoreline of 21-18, 21-13.
Meanwhile, in mixed doubles, the Indian duo of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto emerged victorious against K Sathwik Reddy and Vaishnavi Khadkekar, winning 21-16, 21-14, and advancing further in the competition.
Overall, the tournament is witnessing a strong showing from Indian players, with several of them making significant strides in various categories, promising exciting matchups in the forthcoming rounds.
