Unraveling the Frustrations: Solving the Vexing Car Parking Crisis in Shillong
Letters to the Editor:
Parking Woes in Shillong
Car parking has become a critical challenge in Shillong city and its suburbs, exacerbated by the rapid increase in car ownership. The city faces a shortage of parking areas, with many local streets turning into de facto private parking spaces for residents. This gap between parking demand and supply forces most cars to park on-street, worsening traffic congestion. Despite past governmental efforts to build parking lots, some spaces have been converted into commercial complexes, such as the one near SBI’s Main Branch, where 40% was repurposed for shops. Introducing larger parking facilities using modern technologies, like mechanical garages, could alleviate the issue. The commendable effort by Woodland Hospital in constructing the city’s first mechanical garage is highlighted as a positive step forward. — Dr. Omarlin Kyndiah
The Dominance of the US Dollar
The US dollar continues to reign supreme in global finance, bolstered by Donald Trump’s assertive warning to the BRICS nations about potential economic repercussions if they shift away from the dollar. Despite the interest from countries like Russia and China in finding alternatives, the entrenched position of the dollar makes de-dollarization complex and fraught with risk. Any such shift requires unprecedented international cooperation and faces possible US-imposed economic sanctions. While transitioning away might offer nations more control over their monetary policies, it could also introduce short-term instability. The dollar’s dominance is underscored by its extensive use in international trade, signifying its integral role in the global economy. — VK Lyngdoh
Assam’s Controversial Beef Consumption Ban
The Assam State Cabinet’s recent decision to ban the public consumption of beef, including in hotels and events, is seen as intrusive. Supporters of diverse religious practices point out that consumption of beef is common among many groups in Assam and its neighboring regions. Critics argue that this move is politically motivated rather than economically or socially prudent, and demand its repeal, emphasizing that such a ban encroaches on personal freedoms upheld by the Indian Constitution. — D Bhutia
