Shocking Betrayal: Protectors Turn Predators in the Thriving Rani Timber Smuggling Scandal
In Guwahati, a large-scale timber smuggling operation has reportedly been thriving with the alleged support of Assam’s forest and police officials in the Rani Reserve Forest, Kamrup East Forest Division. This illegal trade involves not only timber but also coal from Meghalaya’s mines and other goods smuggled across the Assam-Meghalaya border.
An organized network is allegedly in place, where forest officials collect substantial bribes to facilitate the operation. Coal trucks reportedly pay Rs 50,000 and timber trucks Rs 15,000 at forest checkpoints, specifically the Sukurberia Forest Beat, allowing 5-10 coal and 10-15 timber trucks to pass through daily without hindrance.
Initially, Forest Range Officer Rosy Barman opposed the smuggling efforts, but recent allegations suggest her vigilance has waned, allowing the operation to prosper. This unchecked deforestation exacerbates environmental issues, leading to human-elephant conflicts as displaced elephants invade nearby villages, harming crops and fields. Villagers face hardship and await government aid.
The smuggling network supposedly involves senior forest officers and police, with bribes collected from unauthorized timber factories and shops. A forest worker from the Rani Forest Range is alleged to be central to the operation. Known as the “master of collection,” this individual reportedly ensures smuggler passage for a fee and acts as a liaison between smugglers and senior officials.
The complicity of authorities, meant to safeguard forest resources, has perversely contributed to deforestation and ecological disbalance. Immediate, decisive action by the district administration, police, and forest departments is essential to dismantle this network, enforce anti-smuggling regulations, and preserve Assam’s dwindling forests. Public awareness and accountability are crucial to halt further environmental harm and promote sustainable forest management.
