Tehran, Dec 4: The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) convened its 28th Council of Ministers meeting in Mashhad, Iran, focusing on enhancing regional collaboration. The event centered around the theme, “Year of Enhanced and Resilient ECO Region through Expansion of Intra-Regional Trade.” Attendees, including foreign and deputy foreign ministers from ECO member countries, discussed significant regional priorities such as trade, energy, transportation, and environmental sustainability. The aim was to bolster regional integration and promote sustainable economic growth, according to an ECO statement released on Tuesday.
A key outcome of the meeting was the adoption of the Mashhad Communique, a document that outlines strategic directives for ECO’s future endeavors and reinforces cooperation among member states. The council highlighted the organization’s growing international engagement, applauding its efforts to forge stronger partnerships with global and regional entities, including United Nations agencies and other multilateral platforms. These collaborations are viewed as vital to advancing ECO’s goals and increasing its international profile.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the significance of ECO as a crucial platform for regional and multilateral cooperation. He urged member states to maximize their untapped potential, envisioning the ECO region as a vibrant and emerging area within the Global South.
ECO, an intergovernmental organization founded in 1985 in Tehran, includes Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. It serves as a forum for discussing development initiatives and promoting trade and investment.
