Urgent Appeal: RRAG Condemns Injustice as 116 Hindu Lawyers Face False Prosecution in Bangladesh – A Northeast News Exclusive
The Rights & Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) has filed a complaint with the UN Special Rapporteurs on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, as well as on Minorities, condemning the wrongful prosecution of 116 Hindu minority individuals in Bangladesh. These individuals, primarily lawyers practicing at the Chittagong District and Sessions Court, stand accused under suspicious circumstances initiated by Khane Alam. On November 27, Alam lodged a complaint falsely alleging that on the previous day, during the court appearance of Krishna Das—an ISKCON spokesperson and Hindu monk facing unfounded sedition charges—these Hindu lawyers, along with hundreds of unidentified individuals, violently attacked mosques and Muslim worshippers, inciting terror. However, according to the RRAG, it was the Hindu community that suffered violence.
Suhas Chakma, Director of RRAG, criticized the accusations as fabricated and an attempt at malicious prosecution meant to inhibit the legal defense of Hindu minority lawyers. Chakma pointed out the implausibility of a single complainant accurately identifying 116 individuals with detailed personal information during the alleged incident. He emphasized that this misuse of the justice system threatens the defendants’ right to a fair trial and equal protection under Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Amid escalating attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly since the rise of the Interim Government, RRAG’s complaint to the UN follows concerns voiced by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) of the British Parliament. On November 25, APPG alerted UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy about the risk of global instability due to the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh, where over 2,000 atrocities against religious minorities have been documented since the displacement of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5. RRAG is urging the UN Special Rapporteurs to intervene with Bangladesh’s Interim Government to cease the false prosecutions and safeguard the legal rights of the targeted lawyers.
