Desperate Search in Manipur: Over 2,000 Army Heroes Deploy Drones and Tracker Dogs to Find Missing Man
The Indian Army has mobilized over 2,000 personnel in a massive effort to locate Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, a Meitei man who has been missing for over a week, authorities confirmed. Singh, a native of Assam’s Cachar district, resided in Khukrul, Imphal West, and served as a works supervisor for a contractor affiliated with the Military Engineering Services at the Leimakhong Military Station of the 57th Mountain Division.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh highlighted the gravity of the situation, urging military officials to take responsibility in locating Singh, who disappeared from the military station. A comprehensive joint search operation commenced on November 25, 2024, involving the Manipur Police and Indian Army. The efforts have employed an array of resources, including over 2,000 troops, helicopters, drones, and army tracker dogs. Additionally, technical intelligence is being leveraged to further the investigation.
Addressing media on December 2, Chief Minister Singh described the circumstances as distressing and reassured the public of ongoing rigorous efforts to find Singh. Despite deploying aerial and ground search operations, the search teams have yet to achieve a breakthrough.
The military camp in Kangpokpi district, approximately 16 km from Imphal, is nestled in the hills inhabited by the Kuki community. The ethnic violence in the region, which began in May last year, has sent shockwaves through the area, resulting in the displacement of many Meiteis, including residents near Leimakhong. The violence has so far claimed over 250 lives, adding urgency and complexity to the search efforts.
