On December 1, 2024, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal addressed the media at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi, responding sharply to the BJP over the recent arrest of AAP’s Naresh Balyan, MLA from Uttam Nagar. Balyan’s detention is linked to an extortion case from the previous year, following a BJP press conference sharing an audio clip allegedly depicting Balyan in conversation with notorious gangster Kapil Sangwan about extorting businessmen.
Kejriwal refuted the BJP’s allegations, asserting that Balyan is a victim of Sangwan, having previously reported receiving extortion threats from the gangster to the Delhi Police over one-and-a-half years ago. Kejriwal criticized Delhi Police for arresting Balyan instead of the gangster himself, echoing sentiments of a judicial rebuke of media coverage of the matter.
He accused Home Minister Amit Shah of sending a message of intimidation to those who report such crimes, suggesting that Shah would rather protect gangsters than prosecute them. Kejriwal reaffirmed that AAP will not entertain any alliances for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February.
