Resounding Triumph in Assam Bypolls: NDA’s Sweeping Victory Celebrated as a Milestone of Exceptional Governance, Declares CM Himanta Biswa Sarma – Breaking Northeast News
Guwahati: In a decisive victory, the BJP-led NDA swept all five Assembly seats in the recent Assam bypolls. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a key ally of the BJP, secured the Bongaigaon seat with candidate Diptimayee Choudhury defeating Congress’s Brajenjit Singha by 35,164 votes. The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), another ally, claimed the Sidli seat as Nirmal Kumar Brahma triumphed over Suddho Kumar Basumatary from the Bodoland Peoples Front with a margin of 37,016 votes. BJP’s Diganta Ghatowal retained the Behali constituency by defeating Congress candidate Jayanta Borah by 9,051 votes. The ruling party’s victories in Samaguri and Dholai were supported by strong leads, underscoring a dominant performance.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the voters, emphasizing the electorate’s strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of governance and growth. He acknowledged the efforts of party workers who campaigned diligently across the state. The Chief Minister reiterated his commitment to Assam’s development, viewing the bypoll results as an endorsement of the NDA’s governance.
These bypolls were necessitated after key sitting legislators vacated Assembly seats, having been elected to Parliament in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Among them were BJP leaders like former Cabinet Minister Parimal Suklabaidya and Ranjit Dutta, as well as prominent figures from AGP and UPPL.
The BJP fielded candidates in Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai, while their allies contested Bongaigaon and Sidli. The opposition Congress participated in all constituencies but failed to secure any victories. Notably, Congress leader Rakibul Hussain, who defeated AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal in the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, could not extend his success to Samuguri, where BJP maintained the lead.
This political outcome further cements BJP’s influence in Assam, reflecting robust public support for its coalition government.
