Heartbreaking Attack: Four Brave Italian Soldiers Suffer Injuries in UNIFIL Lebanon Base Strike
Four Italian soldiers sustained minor injuries after two rockets detonated at a UNIFIL peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon, according to the Italian government, which expressed strong disapproval of the attack. Stationed along the Lebanon-Israel demarcation line, the UN mission, UNIFIL, is tasked with overseeing the volatile region, recently embroiled in intense skirmishes between Israeli forces and Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters.
Since Israel initiated a ground offensive against Hezbollah at the end of September, UNIFIL personnel have been targeted multiple times. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attacks as unacceptable and urged involved parties to safeguard UNIFIL troops and to promptly identify the perpetrators.
An investigation is underway, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani indicating potential Hezbollah involvement in the attack. According to the defense ministry, two 122mm rockets struck a bunker in Chama village’s base and a room near the military police headquarters, inflicting infrastructural damage. The blast caused glass to shatter and slightly injured four soldiers.
Expressing frustration, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto remarked on the recurring assaults on UNIFIL bases. Italy, a significant contributor to the 10,000-member multinational operation, deploys over 1,000 soldiers to the mission.
While accusations have also been directed at Israel for some of the attacks, the Israeli government denies any intentional assaults and has urged UNIFIL to withdraw from southern Lebanon for security reasons, a suggestion UNIFIL has declined.
