Celebrating Coimbatore Day: Unveiling a Century of Inspiring Industrial Triumphs
Coimbatore, historically a hub of industry, saw its economic landscape shaped by textiles, agriculture, and engineering from the late 19th century. The Coimbatore Spinning and Weaving Mills, established in 1888, was the city’s first, famously known as Stanes Mill. The area, notably Avinashi, cultivated vast cotton fields, supporting this thriving textile industry. By the early 1900s, Coimbatore had expanded to 21 mills, employing thousands and exporting goods like sarees and processed leather.
In the 1930s, the commissioning of the Pykara hydroelectric project sparked significant growth by providing ample electricity, encouraging the development of foundries and workshops dedicated to machinery and agricultural repairs. This era catalyzed a broader industrialization, aided by affordable machinery imports during the Great Depression.
Coimbatore’s burgeoning educational institutions began producing a technically proficient workforce, further invigorating the engineering and textile sectors. As these industries flourished, Coimbatore cemented its position as a pivotal industrial center in Southern India.
