Shillong Ropeway Construction to Commence in October: Meghalaya Tourism Minister
SHILLONG: The highly anticipated Shillong Ropeway project is set to begin construction in October, Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced on Thursday. The state government will soon issue a corrigendum to initiate this significant tourism project, aimed at enhancing transportation and tourism in the region.
Set to link Lawsohtun with the iconic Shillong Peak, the ropeway project’s foundation stone was laid by President Droupadi Murmu on January 16. Minister Lyngdoh highlighted the state’s commitment to developing a world-class ropeway system, designed to elevate the tourism experience in Shillong. "Given that the construction season here only starts post-monsoon, we plan to officially kick off the project by early October," he stated. The project, initially slated for a July start, faced delays attributable to the seasonal rains.
Approved by the Meghalaya Cabinet in September 2022, this venture marks the state’s first passenger ropeway system. Minister Lyngdoh expressed optimism about the timeline, expecting the project to reach completion within two years.
The Shillong Ropeway is poised to become a major attraction, providing both residents and tourists with an efficient and scenic mode of transport. This initiative reflects the state government’s strategic efforts to bolster Meghalaya’s tourism infrastructure and place Shillong on the map as a premier tourist destination.
