Crucial Ruling: Kerala HC Mandates State Approval for Elephants, Ensuring Ethical Wildlife Practices

The Kerala High Court has affirmed that individuals cannot bring elephants into the state without obtaining permission from the Kerala government. This declaration was made during hearings focused on issues of cruelty against elephants. The court emphasized that, according to existing laws, the State government holds ownership over all elephants. While individuals may keep elephants, this requires official permission or a license from the authorities. Additionally, the court plans to release guidelines concerning the parade activities involving elephants. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the court noted that 21 captive elephants had died between September 6 and November 13, 2024. As such, the judiciary underscored the importance of preventing elephants from being brought into Kerala or subjected to cruelty for mere entertainment.
