PM Modi’s Bold Vision: Transforming Indian Healthcare with 1 Lakh Medical Seats & 75,000 More, Plus New AIIMS in Bihar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the addition of 1 lakh medical seats across India, with plans for 75,000 more, signifying a significant expansion in medical education. This announcement was made during a function in Darbhanga, Bihar, where Modi laid the foundation for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and inaugurated infrastructure projects worth ₹12,100 crore. Highlighting his government’s “holistic approach to healthcare,” Modi outlined key priorities including disease prevention, accurate diagnosis, affordable and free treatment, enhancement of healthcare facilities in smaller towns, and the integration of technology in healthcare services.
Modi emphasized that the new AIIMS in Darbhanga will transform Bihar’s healthcare sector, offering services not only to local regions like Mithila, Kosi, and Tirhut but also to patients from West Bengal and Nepal. This initiative is expected to generate numerous employment opportunities.
In addition, Modi highlighted the success of the Ayushman Bharat program, with over 1.5 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs facilitating early disease detection and more than four crore patients benefiting from the healthcare scheme. He mentioned the doubling of medical colleges over the past decade and the establishment of nearly two dozen AIIMS nationwide, ensuring wider healthcare access.
The Prime Minister also announced the introduction of medical studies in Hindi and other Indian languages, aiming to make medical education accessible to youth from marginalized communities, enabling them to pursue careers as doctors. This effort underscores the government’s commitment to expanding healthcare education and infrastructure across India.
