Intense Showdown at Naihati: Shocking Shootout Mars Bengal Bypolls with Only 14.65% Turnout
Kolkata, November 13 (IANS): By-elections in West Bengal witnessed sporadic unrest on Wednesday, with reports of violence from certain areas as voting was conducted across six Assembly constituencies. Tensions escalated at Jagatdal, near the Naihati constituency in the North 24 Parganas district, where a shootout occurred within the early hours of polling. The incident resulted in injuries to one individual, reportedly associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress, who is currently receiving medical treatment.
In addition to the shootout, eyewitnesses reported the use of crude bombs by rival groups, causing minor injuries to a few individuals. Another incident of unrest was reported from Booth Number 200 in the Sadarpur area under Haroa, also in North 24 Parganas district. The situation became tense following a heated exchange between the BJP candidate and a booth agent from Trinamool Congress, leading to a standoff between supporters of both parties. The Quick Response Team (QRT) of Central Armed Police Forces, aided by local police, quickly intervened to stabilize the situation.
As of 9 A.M., the average voter turnout across the six constituencies was recorded at 14.65 percent. Taldangra witnessed the highest turnout at 18 percent, followed by Madarihat at 15 percent, Haroa at 14.80 percent, Naihati at 14.51 percent, Medinipur at 14.36 percent, and Sitai at 12 percent, according to data from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.
Meanwhile, a complaint from the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal has prompted the Election Commission to demand a report from the CEO. The complaint accused state police of unlawfully detaining a BJP worker in Medinipur on the polling day. The overall atmosphere remained tense as authorities worked to ensure smooth conduct of the by-elections amid growing political rivalries.
