Heartbreaking Crackdown: China’s Forceful Removal of Young Monks Intensifies Assault on Tibetan Culture and Religion
Chinese authorities have intensified their assimilation policies in Tibet by forcibly relocating young monks from the Taktsang Lhamo Monastic School in Dzoge County, Sichuan, into state-run boarding schools. This move is part of a broader strategy to dilute Tibetan culture and language and enforce a “sinicized” concept of national unity. The Taktsang Lhamo Monastic School, a key center for Tibetan cultural and Buddhist education for over two decades, faces an uncertain future under President Xi Jinping’s administration, despite having previously resisted multiple closures.
Over 500 young monks were enrolled at the school before authorities initiated their transfer to state-controlled institutions, purportedly to modernize Tibet’s education system and bolster Chinese nationalism. The International Tibet Council has condemned this action, labeling it as a calculated endeavor by Beijing to obliterate Tibetan culture and curtail religious freedoms. Under Chinese laws, such as the 2006 amendment to the compulsory education law, all children must attend state schools, sidelining private or religious schooling, a policy disproportionately affecting Tibetans.
Parents desiring to educate their children in Tibetan culture or keep them in monasteries face increasing legal pressure and state surveillance. Resistance to these policies has been met with fierce repression. For instance, on October 2, four young monks detained for “political re-education” after opposing their transfer were subsequently placed in state-run institutions, suffering severe psychological distress. This escalation reflects the intense cultural and educational suppression impacting young Tibetans.
