Unprecedented Surge in Americans Eager to Flee Abroad after Trump’s Victory
Following the U.S. presidential election results, disappointed Americans took to the internet, expressing their frustration by searching for options to move abroad, with Canada emerging as the top destination. Google Trends reported a surge in searches such as “leaving the country” and “how to move to Canada,” particularly in Democratic strongholds like Vermont and Washington. Interest was also notable in swing states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, where Donald Trump secured a victory.
A survey by Casino.org indicated that while 21% of Americans considered relocating if their candidate lost, this sentiment was largely rooted in frustration rather than genuine intent. Nearly 60% of those surveyed said moving was “very unlikely,” and only 2.6% were “very likely” to relocate. Canada remained the most preferred country, followed by the UK and Japan. Notably, Japan’s recent introduction of a “Digital Nomad” visa allows workers from non-Japanese companies to stay for up to six months.
Additional preferred destinations included Australia, Italy, and Ireland, with South Korea and Thailand also making the list. The primary motivations for contemplating an overseas move were cultural experiences, job opportunities, and healthcare. A smaller percentage of respondents cited taxes and education as reasons for considering relocation.
The survey, involving over 4,000 participants aged 18-65, reflects broader national sentiments of dissatisfaction, with an NBC News poll from September reporting that nearly two-thirds of Americans believed the country was on the “wrong track.” This was a slight improvement from the 73% who felt similarly in January 2024.
Overall, while the idea of moving abroad has captured public interest, the likelihood of Americans actually doing so remains relatively low.
