Manipur’s Bold Stand: TCI Upholds Thadou Convention 2024 and Resolutely Challenges KNF’s Claims
The Kuki National Front (KNF), a Suspension of Operations group, recently voiced opposition to the Thadou Convention 2024’s claim that “Thadou is not Kuki.” The Thadou Community International (TCI), disputing KNF’s accusations, argues that the statement attempts to divide the community and is unfounded. TCI highlights that many Thadou-speaking individuals, leading key Kuki organizations, have distanced themselves from their tribe to align with the Any Kuki Tribes (AKT), a political entity added to Manipur’s Scheduled Tribes list in 2003. TCI contends that the Kuki identity is not recognized by most non-Naga tribes in Manipur besides AKT.
TCI underscores that the term “Kuki” as an umbrella concept is outdated, noting that tribes like Paite, Vaiphei, Zou, and Simte identify collectively as Zomi. They reject the name “Kuki-Zo” as misleading, arguing it falsely elevates the Kuki identity above its actual standing among Zomi, Hmar, and Mizo tribes. The organization continues to advocate for peace and development within the Thadou community and urges non-violent conflict resolutions in Manipur.
Established on August 3, 2024, TCI aims to represent the Thadou globally, striving to preserve their distinct culture and identity. However, the Thadou Inpi General Headquarters, the main body representing the Thadou tribe, has firmly rejected TCI’s authority, dismissing the Guwahati convention as unauthorized. They criticized the slogan “Thadou is not Kuki” as a divisive response fueled by factions within AKT. Chongpu Kipgen, President of Thadou Inpi, emphasized the historical and cultural ties of the Thadou to the broader Kuki identity, warning that rejecting this connection could erode the Thadou tribe’s heritage and their shared history with other Kuki groups.
