Shocking Alert: Puducherry’s Air Quality Plummets to ‘Very Poor’ Levels After Deepavali Celebrations
Thick smog enveloped vehicles near the toll gate on the Tindivanam National Highway in Puducherry during Deepavali, as air quality in the Union Territory deteriorated sharply. The Puducherry Pollution Control Committee (PPCC) reported significant spikes in particulate matter levels, PM10 and PM2.5, in areas like Reddiyarpalayam, Mudaliarpet, and Anna Nagar, far exceeding usual levels. On Deepavali, PM10 averaged 240 µg/m³ and PM2.5 averaged 202 µg/m³, compared to lower levels the previous day. In Karaikal, PM10 and PM2.5 also surpassed standards, averaging 143 µg/m³ and 54 µg/m³, while SO2 and NO2 remained within limits. Furthermore, data from Jawahar Nagar recorded high PM10 and PM2.5 levels at 238 µg/m³ and 207 µg/m³, respectively. Noise levels increased in Karaikal but decreased in Muthialpet and Mudaliarpet. The PPCC attributed this rise to cracker bursting, heavy traffic, and other human activities, leading to poor air quality in Puducherry and moderate levels in Karaikal.
