Innao FC in the men’s category and Diyun Bazaar Girls FC in the women’s category claimed victory at the 3rd Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students’ Union (APCSU) tournament. DBFC FC and Hajong Girls FC were the runners-up for the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
The tournament marked APCSU’s 33rd Foundation Day and featured 23 teams from the districts of Changlang, Namsai, and Lohit, all competing in a knockout format. The event, with the theme “Say No to Drugs,” aimed to tackle drug abuse. Supported by organizations like Oil India, Glorious Life Rehabilitation and Foundation, local administration, 11 Assam Rifles, Mahabodhi Society, and Sadanarama Foundation, the tournament kicked off on October 20.
APCSU President Drishya Muni Chakma remarked on the organization’s stance against drug abuse, highlighting past initiatives reaching out to villages for awareness. He emphasized that a drug-free zone is essential for instilling discipline among youth and children.
The final match drew a crowd of around 6,000 to 7,000 spectators, with the event graced by notable figures. Chief guest Somlung Mossang, ex-MLA of Diyun-Bordumsa, praised APCSU for their youth-focused initiatives and stressed preserving culture through indigenous sports. Other dignitaries included BJP Namsai District President Sujana Namchoom and 11 Assam Rifles 2nd In-charge HK Acharya.
Abhish Chakma, Chairman of the tournament’s organizing committee, voiced concerns about the widespread menace of drug addiction crossing community lines and affecting various age groups. He underscored the need for timely intervention to avert its spread.
The event not only celebrated sports but also served as a vital platform for promoting a drug-free society, engaging local communities, and advocating for cultural preservation through sports.
