Empowering Education: Meghalaya Urgently Calls for Centre’s Support to Transform 18,000 Teacher’s Lives
Shillong is grappling with a pressing educational issue: around 18,000 teachers across various government, SSA, ad-hoc, and private schools in Meghalaya remain untrained. In response, the state government has sought the central government’s aid to roll out online training programs similar to the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed).
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma acknowledged the challenge of simultaneously training such a large number of teachers, noting the state’s previous reliance on the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for teacher training before its cessation in 2017. Additionally, a Supreme Court decision in a Uttarakhand case invalidated online D.El.Ed programs for government recruitment purposes. However, Sangma reassured that this ruling does not affect current NIOS-qualified D.El.Ed diploma holders employed in Meghalaya.
To tackle this education crisis, the state government has engaged the Ministry of Education, IGNOU, and NIOS to evaluate the possibility of reinstating a similar online training initiative. Sangma emphasized that while training is crucial, the commitment and dedication from teachers are paramount for effective education delivery.
This effort highlights the state’s commitment to enhancing educational standards and providing quality teaching, despite facing significant logistical and regulatory obstacles. As Meghalaya navigates this complex educational landscape, the government’s strategy includes balancing the imperatives of quality training with the practicalities of large-scale implementation.
