A new elephant camp is set to open at Chadivayal, near the Siruvani foothills, with the capacity to accommodate 20 elephants, according to Forest Department sources. Expected to be completed in three to four months, this will be the second elephant camp in the region, following the Elephant Rehabilitation and Rescue Centre at MR Palayam in Tiruchi. The State government allocated ₹8 crore last year for this facility. The site now includes three swimming pools and a mud pool, enhancing the camp’s amenities. The project builds upon a temporary camp established in 2012 to house kumki elephants and address human-elephant conflicts. The upgraded camp will feature an elephant-proof trench, electricity, and dedicated kitchen and storage rooms. Located between the Chinnar and Periyar streams, the camp will cost ₹63,100 per elephant for feed and ₹7,000 per elephant for medical care. In addition to kumki elephants, the facility will cater to mutt and temple elephants needing medical treatment and elephants owned by individuals lacking proper documentation.
