Revolutionizing Legacy: Unveiling the Kerala Museum’s Inspiring JANAL Digital Archive
The Kerala Museum in Kochi is revolutionizing the museum experience by blending art and history education with modern digital tools. Known for its dioramas and engaging sound and light shows, the museum offers a memorable learning experience into Kerala’s history. Once the Kerala History Museum, it went digital in 2022, offering 200 artworks online through Google Arts and Culture. In 2023, the museum launched the JANAL digital archive, featuring innovative digital exhibitions that delve into Kerala’s diverse histories. According to Aditi Zacharias, the museum’s director, these efforts aim to create an interactive and experiential learning platform using historical archives and community microhistories. The museum has hosted numerous interdisciplinary events intersecting themes of climate change, gender, and class, enriching the public’s understanding of Kerala’s interconnected histories. The initiative is supported by CSR funding, with significant contributions from entities like Cochin Shipyard, enhancing the museum’s infrastructure. Indira Rajan of the National Council of CBSE Schools highlighted the museum’s role in sparking curiosity among students. Established in 1987, the museum continues to draw students, educators, and history enthusiasts, accessible just 100 meters from the Pathadippalam Metro Station.
